Wood Wedding Band Couple Holding Hands

Wood Wedding Ring Care Guide: Everything You Need to Know

One of the first things people ask us — often right after falling in love with one of our rings — is some version of: "But how do I take care of it?"

It's a fair question. Most of us grew up with the idea that a wedding ring is a metal band that you put on and largely forget about. Wood feels different. More natural, more alive — and for some people, that raises a quiet worry: is it fragile? Is it complicated to maintain? Will it hold up to real life?

The short answer is: yes, it will. Wood rings are more resilient than most people expect, and caring for one is genuinely simple. This guide covers everything — from what to do on the average Tuesday to what to do if your ring ever needs professional attention. We've been making and wearing wood rings for over twenty years, and we want you to feel completely confident wearing yours.

First, a Word About Why Wood Rings Hold Up So Well

Before we get into care, we want to address the anxiety at the root of the question — because the truth is reassuring.

The hardwoods Marlon selects for our rings are not decorative softwoods. We work with some of the densest, most resilient woods in the world: Guayacán — also known as Lignum Vitae, historically used to build ship propeller shafts — along with Guapinol, Nacascolo, Walnut, and reclaimed Bourbon Barrel Oak. These are tight-grained, heavy hardwoods chosen precisely because they endure.

Every ring also leaves our studio finished with a multi-layer waterproof sealant. This is not an afterthought — it's a fundamental part of how we build each ring, and it's what allows our bands to be worn through daily life without worry. The sealant protects against moisture, maintains the colour and grain over time, and gives the wood a smooth, refined finish that stays beautiful with minimal effort.

You can read more about the specific woods and materials we use on our Sustainable Materials page.

The result is a ring that is lightweight — noticeably lighter than a comparable all-metal band — beautifully unique in its grain and texture, and genuinely built to last. Many of our customers tell us they barely notice they're wearing it, which, if you ask us, is exactly what a great ring should feel like.

Daily Wear: What's Fine and What to Be Mindful Of

The good news is that most of daily life is completely fine for your wood ring. The things that actually matter are fewer than you might think.

Perfectly fine

Washing your hands is no problem at all — brief contact with water and mild soap is exactly what the waterproof sealant is designed for. Don't give it a second thought. Light outdoor activity, cooking, everyday tasks at work or at home — all fine.

Worth being mindful of

The single most important thing to protect your ring from is impact. Wood and metal rings are built with structural integrity — the inlay, the band, the connection between them — and that structure can be compromised by a sharp, hard knock. We're talking about the kind of impact that would concern you with any ring: hitting your hand hard against a door frame, striking a tool against a hard surface, the kind of blow that makes you wince.

This isn't about being precious with your ring. It's just worth being aware of during activities where your hands take real punishment — heavy construction work, certain sports, lifting heavy materials. For those moments, taking the ring off and keeping it safe is the simplest choice.

Extended heat and prolonged water exposure

Hot tubs, saunas, and sustained exposure to extreme heat are best avoided. Heat can cause wood to expand and contract in ways that may, over time, affect the fit and finish. Similarly, while brief water contact is completely fine, prolonged submersion — like keeping it on during a long swim — isn't ideal. The sealant is robust, but it's not designed to withstand extended soaking.

The practical version of this guidance: wash your hands freely, enjoy the outdoors, live your life. Just skip the hot tub and take it off before activities where your hands take heavy impact.

✓  DO

✗  AVOID

Wash hands normally — brief water is fine

Use harsh chemicals, bleach, or cleaning solvents

Wear during everyday work and outdoor activity

Wear in hot tubs or expose to extreme heat

  Remove before heavy-impact activities

  Allow prolonged submersion in water

Remove before hot tubs, saunas, or long swims

  Use ultrasonic jewelry cleaners

Store in a dry place when not wearing

Strike or bang the ring against hard surfaces

Cleaning Your Wood Ring at Home

This is one of the places where wood rings are genuinely easier than people expect. There's no special routine required, and nothing complicated to remember.

For everyday cleaning

A soft, damp cloth is all you need. Wipe the ring gently to remove any dust or residue, then dry it thoroughly with a second soft cloth. That's it. You don't need jewellery cleaning solutions, polishing compounds, or anything special — in fact, for the wood portions of the ring, you actively want to avoid them.

For the metal portions

The sterling silver or gold elements of your ring can be gently polished with a soft jewelry cloth to maintain their shine. This is the same care you'd give any fine metal jewelry. Avoid abrasive cloths or anything that might scratch the surface.

What to avoid entirely

Never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or solvent-based cleaning products on your wood ring.

These can strip the protective sealant, dull or discolor the wood, and in some cases damage the bond between the wood inlay and the metal band.

If you're ever unsure about a product, the answer is: soft cloth and water only.

About the Waterproof Sealant

Every ring we make is finished with a professional-grade waterproof sealant before it leaves our studio. This is applied in multiple layers and fully cured — it's what gives our rings their smooth, refined surface and what makes them genuinely resistant to daily moisture.

The sealant is transparent and matte-finished, so it doesn't change the appearance of the wood — you see the full beauty of the grain exactly as Marlon shaped it. It also provides a degree of protection against minor surface scratches.

Over years of daily wear, the sealant can gradually wear in areas of high contact — typically the interior of the band. This is completely normal, and it's exactly why we offer our studio refresh service.

Our Studio Refresh and Repair Service

This is something we're genuinely proud of, and something that sets our rings apart from most jewellery you'll ever own: we back every ring we make with a lifetime maintenance and repair guarantee.

If your ring ever needs attention — whether the sealant needs refreshing after years of wear, the finish needs polishing, or something structural needs care — you can send it back to Marlon. He will assess it, carry out whatever work is needed, and return it to you looking as close to new as the materials allow.

To start the process of a ring refresh, reseal or repair, complete the order form here and follow the instructions for returning the ring to us (don’t forget protective packaging as paper envelopes will get destroyed by postal service machines.)

We also offer a ring size exchange programme for customers whose ring no longer fits — fingers change over time, and we want your ring to always feel right. You can read more about that process on our ring sizing page.

Storing Your Ring

When you're not wearing your ring, a small jewelry box or a soft pouch in a dry place is ideal. Keep it away from extreme temperature changes, direct sunlight for extended periods, and any surfaces that could scratch the finish.

Most of our customers wear their ring every day and rarely think about storage at all — which is how a wedding ring should be. But if you're travelling, working in conditions where you'd prefer not to wear it, or simply putting it somewhere safe for a few days, those are the basics to keep in mind.

The Honest Summary: Less Maintenance Than You'd Think

We've talked to thousands of customers over the years who were drawn to wood rings but nervous about the practicalities. Almost without exception, once they've been wearing their ring for a few months, their feedback is the same: it's easier than I expected. I barely think about it.

That's because a well-made wood ring — built from the right hardwoods, properly sealed, crafted with structural care — is a genuinely wearable everyday object. It's not fragile. It doesn't require a special routine. It doesn't need to come off every time you wash your hands.

What it needs is the same common sense you'd apply to any beautiful thing: protect it from sharp impacts, keep it away from harsh chemicals and prolonged heat, clean it gently when needed. And when it needs professional attention after years of faithful wear, send it home to us and we'll take care of it.

If you'd like to read more about how we build our rings — the woods we choose, the construction methods we've developed over two decades, and why durability is something we think about from the very first cut — our 10 Things We've Learned post is a good companion to this one. And if you're ready to find your ring, we'd love to show you what we make.
