The Benefit of Wood Wedding Rings
Share
Every piece of wood has already lived a life before Marlon touches it. It grew slowly — shaped by seasons, by soil, by light filtering through a forest canopy. When he cuts and shapes it into a ring, that history doesn't disappear. It becomes part of what you wear.
That deep connection to the natural world is what started Marlon's original organic jewelry designs, and it's what keeps us making wood wedding rings more than twenty years later. A wooden ring carries something no metal band can replicate: a symbol of life, connection to place and our planet.
What Wood Means as a Symbol
Not only do we feel a connection to nature through wood, but trees represent strength, patience, and growth — qualities that take years to develop and decades to fully appreciate. The rings visible in a cross-section of a tree trunk are a record of time: every year of drought and abundance, cold and warmth, written in the grain.
A wood wedding ring wears that symbolism quietly. The grain you see on the band is unique to that single piece of wood — no two rings are ever identical — which makes it a natural emblem of the singular nature of your relationship. It's also a material that changes subtly over time, deepening in character the longer it's worn. Much like a marriage itself.
Sustainable from the Forest Floor Up
For us, sustainable jewelry has never been a marketing phrase. It's the foundation of our artistry, every aspect of our jewelry business, and our personal lives.
Marlon grew up in the forests surrounding his home in rural Nicaragua, learning from an early age to work with what the land offered. That relationship with natural materials shapes every organic wood ring we make. The hardwoods we use — Guayacán, Guapinol, Nacascolo, Walnut, and others — are sourced responsibly: gathered from the forest floor, salvaged from fallen timber, or obtained from trusted suppliers. We love working with non-traditional wood to create meaningful wedding bands - like Bourbon Barrel and Dogwood.
The metals we pair with our wood are 100% recycled sterling silver and solid gold. Recycled gold requires no new mining — it carries none of the environmental and human costs that conventional gold extraction involves. Our commitment to recycled metals is personal - as we've seen the negative impact from gold mining in communities in Nicaragua first hand. You can read more about the full story behind our materials on our Sustainable Materials page.
We also offset the carbon footprint of every shipment and are actively engaged in a reforestation project in Nicaragua — returning native trees to land that has given us so much. Read about that work here.
Bring Your Own Wood — and Your Own Story
One of the most powerful things about a custom wood wedding ring is that the wood itself can come from your life. We regularly work with customers who bring us something deeply personal: a branch from a tree in their garden, timber salvaged from a family home, wood from an antique piece of furniture that belonged to someone they loved.
We've made wooden rings from a grandfather's workshop floorboards, from a tree that fell in a customer's childhood backyard, and from driftwood gathered at the beach where a proposal happened. In each case, the ring doesn't just represent the relationship — it's made from it.
If you have a piece of wood with a story, we want to hear about it. Our custom ring process begins with a single email, and we'll guide you through everything from there.
A Wood Ring Built to Last
We hear the durability question often, and the honest answer is: our wooden rings are built for real life. Marlon selects only the densest hardwoods — Guayacán alone is one of the hardest natural woods on earth — and every ring is finished with a professional waterproof sealant. Lightweight, comfortable, and uniquely beautiful, they're designed to be worn every day for a lifetime.
Every Naturaleza ring also comes with a lifetime maintenance and repair guarantee. If your ring ever needs attention, you send it back to our Louisville studio and Marlon restores it personally. We make these rings to last — because they're meant to be a symbol of your commitment for a lifetime.
